Eligibility for Applying for the Maintenance Grants

  1. Are Maltese Citizens, or have at least one parent being a Maltese Citizen; or be a national of a European Union/European Economic Area state or a family member of such European Union/European Economic Area national (provided that such person has obtained permanent residence in Malta; or be a national of European Union/European Economic Area state who is in Malta exercising his/her Treaty rights as a worker, self-employed person or person retaining such status; or be a Third Country National that has been granted refugee/long term residence status.Have resided in Malta for a period of not less than 5 years immediately prior to the commencement of the relative course of studies. Provided that for the purpose of calculating the 5 year requirement, consideration shall not be given to that period of time during which the student as per this Regulation would have been residing outside Malta due to medical treatment or any other purpose that the Board may consider acceptable.iii. Have completed their term of compulsory education.iv. Are attending the higher education course regularly and making satisfactory progress.v. Are not in full-time employment or in part-time employment and working more than 20 hours weekly.

    vi. Are progressing in their level of studies. Progression of level of studies shall be determined according to the Malta Qualification Framework levels as established by the Malta Qualification Recognition Information Centre or any other competent body.

Applying Online

Apply for the Maintenance Grant is on a yearly bases. Students can access their application through education.gov.mt/studentsgrants using their e-ID and password. Students who apply after the 30 November will not receive the maintenance grants and supplementary as from the beginning of the academic year. Instead they will start receiving maintenance grants and supplementary as from the date of submission. Students who fail to confirm their online application will not be awarded Students’ Maintenance Grants.

Updating Personal Details on the Online Application

Any amendments to the online application should be done until the month of June of the current academic year.

Personal details such as: changing one’s bank account can be changed through accessing education.gov.mt/studentsgrants using their e-ID and password, and accessing Update My Profile. After making the required amendments, students must ensure that the new changes have been saved by selecting the ‘Save and Submit’ button.
