Conrad Vassallo, Director of the #MCAST Institute of ICT, delivered a technical talk about the process of building drones from scratch at the MITA New Emerging Technologies Lab. The session focused on the identification of the main hardware components such as the flight controller and the function of sensors like the gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer and GPS . The talk also addressed how software could be configured to read the sensor data to stabilise the drone during flight.
Conrad Vassallo then focused on the use of 3D printing and CNC technologies used in the manufacturing process of the frame of the drone. Three scratch built drones were available for demonstration including an indoor flying 3D printed drone, a racing drone, and an experimental drone used for research purposes.
